My KITCHEN Reveal + Banana Bread Recipe

October 16, 2018

Hi everyone, happy Tuesday!  Today, I’m back to share a little peek into the only room in my apartment that I haven’t shared yet… my kitchen.  I’m also sharing one of my all-time favorite recipes for the Autumn season… well, let’s be honest – one of my favorite recipes for anytime of the year!  Keep scrolling for more!

I don’t have a lot of decorations in my kitchen because I love how simple and pretty the fixtures are by themselves.  My favorite thing about the kitchen in general is the concrete counter tops.  Concrete counter tops are something I’d like to have in my own house one day so finding them in a rental unit was amazing!  Another one of my favorite things is the white subway tiles.  I also have these in my bathroom and it’s so nice!  It really brightens up the space while looking simple and modern at the same time.  That also goes for my white cabinets – I wouldn’t want them any other way!

Now onto the banana bread recipe… this recipe calls for 3 loaf pans and here are the ingredients you’ll need to get started:

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 eggs

4 bananas

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/8 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Grease your pans or use pan liners.  Mash the bananas.  Add the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla, and the mashed bananas to your mixing bowl.  Mix well with your mixer on medium speed.  Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.  Add that to the mixture and blend thoroughly.  At this point, you can also add in chocolate chips or walnuts or whatever you want if you’re looking to add something special! Pour the mixture evenly into the 3 loaf pans and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until the breads tests done.

And then you’re done!  This recipe is SO easy.  Honestly, it only takes five to ten minutes of prep time and then you end up with 3 loaves – it’s so nice!  This has easily become my favorite treat to make when I have some down time.  That’s all for today’s post, I hope it made you hungry!  Tell me in the comments what your favorite family recipe is… this one is definitely mine.  Have a great week!

Post-Grad Job Application Process

October 9, 2018

Hi cuties, happy Tuesday!  I hope your October is going well so far!  Today, I’m here to talk all about the post-college graduation job application process.  I graduated from James Madison University last December and began my first full-time corporate position in January… keep reading to hear how I did it!

I started my job hunt in the beginning of the semester, in September.  I knew I wanted a job in the marketing and advertising industry and from my internship experience, I knew I wanted an account management position.  In my search, I realized account management positions have a lot of different names – essentially, different companies come up with different names for the same job.  For example, I found account coordinator, junior account manager, and project manager positions that were all exactly the same so if you’re looking for a certain position, keep in mind that it may have multiple names that you may not be familiar with.

Something else I learned while applying for jobs is that one resume does not fit all.  While you may be qualified for each position you’re applying for, if you don’t adjust your resume to match each position, you probably aren’t going to get it.  If the position is digital based, highlight your digital/tech background and if the position is social media based, highlight your social media experience.  If you tailor your resume to each individual application, you’ll have much better luck getting an interview because they’ll be able to tell you really read the application and envisioned yourself in that role.  Another awesome way to do this is by writing cover letters.  If you do want to keep your resume more generic, at least attach a cover letter calling out the position by name and giving your resume a little bit more personality.  Letting your personality shine will allow you to stand out from the other applicants!

Another important thing to keep in mind is your work-life balance.  I interviewed at a company where the hours were 7am-7pm and my commute would’ve been an hour and a half each way on top of that. Once I found out what my day-to-day would look like at that company, I decided to look elsewhere.  Although your first job probably isn’t going to be your dream job, you don’t want to be miserable so it’s important to realize what’s important to you as you start to shape your future.  Even though you’re a recent college grad and don’t have a ton of experience under your belt, you’re still extremely capable and can offer a lot to a company so don’t loose your sense of worth in this process.

All in all, I submitted applications for about 20 different positions and ended up getting an offer from a handful.  I accepted a position that I was really excited about and it’s been amazing so far!  Looking for your first job can be really, really tough and stressful but you’ll find something that’s great for you in the end.  Be sure to come back next week for my final apartment room reveal – my kitchen!  And there might be a banana bread recipe thrown in there as well…  See ya next Tuesday!

Fall is Here ft. Fossil

October 2, 2018

Hey everyone, welcome to my first Fall-themed post of the year!  Fall is my absolute favorite season and I’m so, so excited we’re finally into October.  As you might know from previous posts or if you follow along on my Instagram account, Fossil sends me a few goodies every so often and today, I’m going to share this season’s favorites with you.  Let’s get started!

Beginning with my bag, isn’t it one of the most practical and beautiful bags you’ve ever seen!?  I love love love the smaller size and the color is a rich, mahogany brown that goes perfectly with the new season.  It’s called the Campbell Crossbody (click here) and it’s my new go-to.

Fossil was super sweet and also sent a stunning watch to go along with the bag.  I’ve been super into watches lately, especially now that I’m working in a corporate office full-time.  This one, called the Tailor Three-Hand Winter White Leather Watch (click here), is adorable and the neutral color is so great because you can wear it with almost anything!  I was even able to pull off pairing it with a white sweater!

That’s all for this week’s post, thank you so much for reading!  What’s your favorite Fall accessory?  Let me know in the comments below.  Have a great week and be sure to come back next week for another festive post!

Podcasts I’ve Been Listening To Lately

September 25, 2018

Hi cuties, welcome back to the Allison in Wonderland blog!  Last week, I asked you on Instagram what post you wanted to see this week and you voted for me to share the podcasts that I’ve been listening to (and loving!) lately so here it is!  I’ve been super into podcasts for the past few months and I’m so excited to share my favorites… let’s get into it!

The first podcast I’ve been absolutely obsessed with is called What We Said.  What We Said is a relatively new podcast featuring Jaci Marie Smith and Chelsea Curtis and they talk about all kinds of various topics.  They put up new episodes every Tuesday and I always listen to it as soon as I can.  The What We Said episodes are about an hour long so it’s great to listen to on your drive to work or at the gym!  When I listen to it, I feel like I’m chatting with some of my best friends!

The next podcast I’ve been loving is called The Goal Digger Podcast.  The Goal Digger Podcast features an incredible woman named Jenna Kutcher and she gives the best advice on social media marketing, branding, and building a better you!  I first found out about this podcast because I came across Jenna’s Instagram profile.  She exudes the most positive energy and has such a love for others – it’s amazing!  I highly recommend this one.

Another podcast that I’ve been listening to non-stop is called The Porch.  The Porch is a young adult and singles Christian ministry in Dallas and they started publishing their sermons on the podcast app a couple years ago.  With my busy schedule, it’s nice to be able to listen to sermons when I’m driving or getting ready in the morning.  It’s something I look forward to hearing every week!

That’s all the podcasts I’m going to be sharing today.  Do you listen to podcasts?  Let me know in the comments below.  Have a great week and I’ll see you next Tuesday!

Things I'm Loving Right Now

22 Years

September 18, 2018

Hey hey hey cuties, welcome back to my blog!  When my birthday rolls around each year, I used to do a blog post showing what I got for my birthday but for the past couple years, I’ve been doing more of a gratitude post so that’s what I’m going to share with you in this post.  Today, I chose to write about a few things, big and small, that I value and am grateful for on a day-to-day basis.  Let’s get started!

  1. Sunshine.  Over the past few years, I’ve really noticed how much energy – specifically creative energy – I get from natural light.  The sun doesn’t have to be brilliantly shining outside but if I can at least see the sun poking out from the clouds enough for the light to fill up my apartment, I’m a happy camper!
  2. Sleep.  Recently, I’ve really noticed how much I value sleep.  I don’t need to get a crazy amount of sleep to be satisfied but sleeping really effects my mood and how I feel physically.  In college, there were many times where I had to either choose sleep or studying and most of the time, I chose sleep because, without sleep, the next day would be a total wash.  Is anyone else like this?  I envy you if you can function with one hour of sleep!
  3. A tidy home.  Living in a clean and tidy apartment/house is something I’ve always needed.  No matter what I have to get done in my day, I always clean first because it allows me to clear my head.  Once I have everything cleaned up and in it’s place, I can fully focus on everything else I have to do.

If you’d like to check out my previous birthday blog posts, click here for last year’s and click here for the year before that.  Please leave a comment below sharing something you’re grateful for – whether it be something big or small!  Thanks for reading and, as always, I’ll see you back here next Tuesday for another brand new post.  Have a great week!

How To

How To: Be a Morning Person

September 11, 2018

Hi everyone, happy Tuesday!  Today’s post is going to be all about how to become a morning person.  In the summer, it’s really easy for me to get up early because the sun it out.  But now that we’re moving into fall and it’s harder to wake up because the sun is rising later in the day, I have some tips and tricks to get you out of bed earlier.  Let’s get started!

The first thing I would recommend is going to sleep earlier.  I always feel better when I’ve had a full eight hours or so of sleep and when you go to sleep earlier, you can get your eight hours in without sleeping half the day away.  Once you’ve adjusted your sleeping schedule, it will feel more and more normal to be getting up earlier!

My next tip is to find your morning routine.  Whether it’s taking your coffee and sitting on the porch or going for a run, having a set schedule is always nice!  I find that I’m most productive in the morning, so getting things like cleaning and organizing taken care of first thing allows me to have a more relaxed evening.

My last tip is to allow light to come in your windows.  Don’t block it with blinds or curtains!  Even though the sun is starting to rise later, once it does start coming up, it will help you wake up naturally.  If you have a house or apartment that has a few different rooms, choose the room that has the most morning light to be your bedroom.  Personally, I know I’d much rather wake up from the sunlight than from an alarm.

That’s all for this week’s post, I hope you enjoyed!  Who else is excited for Fall?  It’s my favorite season!  See ya next week!

End-of-Summer OOTD

September 4, 2018

Hi babes, welcome back to the Allison in Wonderland blog!  Can you believe it’s already September?  I know I can’t.  Luckily, it’s still pretty warm outside on the east coast but I know our warmer days are numbered so I wanted to get this end-of-summer OOTD posted for you guys before it’s too late.  Scroll down to see one of my favorite outfits for this time of the year!

Starting off with my orange, two-piece set, it’s from Luca and Grae (click here)!  It’s the first purchase I’ve ever made from the online boutique and I was so impressed.  The order shipped out the same day I placed it and it arrived in only a few days even though it was shipping all the way across the country!  The set fits perfectly and I couldn’t be happier with it.  The top is so fun and flattering and the pants are adjustable so you have some leniency if you aren’t quite sure what your size will be.  I’ve also been able to wear these pants to work!  I just pair them with a tucked in, long-sleeve white tee and a pair of slides and it’s perfectly work-appropriate.  So nice!

I also paired one of my absolute favorite necklaces from Amanda Deer Jewelry (click here) with the outfit and it totally brought it all together!  I’ve never really been one to wear choker necklaces but this one caught my eye.  I love wearing gold jewelry and I felt like this outfit called for something more trendy so this necklace totally fit the bill.  It’s adjustable in length (so you won’t feel like you’re actually choking) and it’s a perfect complement to a statement outfit like this one!

Moving on to my bag, it’s from Urban Outfitters (click here)!  It’s one of the cutest bags I’ve ever owned but I will say, it doesn’t hold a lot.  I personally have some larger items I have to carry with me all the time, like my Epi-Pen and Benadryl, and those take up a lot of room but if you’re only taking your wallet and phone with you, it would be perfect!

That’s all for this OOTD.  Would you like to see an OOTD for Fall as we move into the cooler months?  Let me know in the comments below.  Have a great week and I’ll see you next Tuesday!

Sorority Life: Tips for Rushing

August 21, 2018

Hey hey hey babes, happy Tuesday!  Welcome to another post in my back-to-school series.  This is the first year that I will not be returning to school and I can’t believe it!  College (and school in general) went by so, so quickly and I’m excited to share a few more things I learned during my time at JMU.  Keep reading to hear my best advice if you’re thinking about rushing a sorority!

  1. Be yourself.  The university rush system is mentally exhausting and I totally understand wanting to be accepted by everyone.  Especially when you’re a freshman, you’re looking to fit in wherever you can and sometimes that means trying to get “in” with people you shouldn’t necessarily be hanging out with.  If you make sure to act like yourself when you’re going house to house, you may not be chosen by every sorority but at least the ones that do choose you will be choosing the real you.  You’re amazing and your sorority should appreciate that!
  2. When analyzing which sorority is the right fit for you, imagine hanging out with the sisters everyday of the week.  Even though sororities only have chapter meetings once a week (typically on Sundays), you’ll definitely spend additional nights during the week with the sisters.  Whether it’s committee meetings, social requirements, or just hanging out, you’ll see them almost every night.  If you get excited at the thought of these girls becoming your best friends, then it’s probably the right place for you!
  3. If, at any point in the rush process, it doesn’t feel right… drop.  The process of getting a bid from a sorority is a long one and once you finally get it, it might be hard to admit if it’s not everything you imagined it to be.  You might feel embarrassed or upset but if you’re not feeling good, it’s no big deal to drop!  It’s better to drop and save yourself a lot of time and money than to be miserable being involved in something your heart isn’t in.

That’s all for today’s post – thank you for reading!  If you’re in a sorority, let me know which one in the comments section.  Have a great week and I’ll see you back here next Tuesday!

Ways to Make College Move-In Easier

August 14, 2018

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog!  Today’s post is all about how to be prepared for moving into your college dorm.  As you may know, I recently graduated from James Madison University so I have a few tips and tricks for moving away to school.  Let’s get started!

My first tip is to bring way more tacks and command strips than you think you’ll need.  When I moved into my freshman dorm, I broke a ton of tacks trying to push them into the wall and some of the command strips I brought didn’t stick so I had to use another one.  My dad and brother were so nice and ran to Walmart to buy more but I definitely wish I had just brought extras in the first place.

That leads me to my next tip… know where the nearest superstore is.  Whether it’s Walmart or Target, you’ll undoubtedly need to run out at least once during move-in so it’ll make your life just a little bit easier already knowing where it is.  Knowing where stores are also helps you to feel more comfortable in your new town!

Another tip is to keep your dorm room door open while you’re moving in.  There are going to be so many people walking in and out of your building and you might start to recognize some faces!  This also makes it easier for you to meet your RA and the people in the rooms right next to yours.

My last tip is to not feel embarrassed if you get emotional when your parents and siblings are leaving.  Some people might be able to keep it together but I definitely cried a little bit when my family left.  One of the best things I learned in college was to show my emotions and just remember that everyone moving into your dorm is in the same boat.  You’re all freshman and you’re all about to be living away from home for the first time.  It’s okay to be sad, just remember to have fun later!

That’s all for this week’s post, I hope you found it useful!  If you have any moving tips you’d like to share, please leave them in the comments below.  Make sure to come back next week for another back-to-school post – I’ll see you then!
