My Summer Internship: Take Two

August 15, 2017

Hey everyone and welcome back to Allison in Wonderland!  If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you might remember that I wrote a post at the end of last summer about how my internship went (click here to read) and now I’m back to write about it again because sadly, my internship for this summer ended a couple days ago.

I can’t remember if I mentioned this in last year’s post but I was interning at a marketing firm in Annapolis, Maryland!  Last summer was my first internship ever and I was lucky enough to be asked back over my winter break and then again for this summer!  Even though I was returning to the same company, my role for this summer switched just a little bit.  Last summer, I was the design intern and I was working in the creative services department with the graphic designers.  Even though working in creative services was an absolutely wonderful experience, I wanted to see a different side of the business, so I moved over to the marketing department this summer to work with the Vice President of Marketing!

Throughout the past three months, I was integrated in in-house and out-of-house meetings with a lot of our clients, collaborated with co-workers both in and out of the marketing department, and I learned a ton!  Internships are extremely beneficial in general, but being able to intern at the same company for two years and grow within it was incredible.  I was able to experience working in multiple departments for the same company and because of that, I was able to learn from and make connections with so many of the employees!

Ending my internship at this company was so sad for me, not only because of how amazing the people are, but because it’s the last internship I’ll ever have.  I’m graduating this December (a semester early) and it’s so crazy to think that the next job I have will (hopefully) be a full-time position!  I’m so excited to be at this point in my life, I feel like I’ve been waiting for it forever, and I can’t wait to see where I am six months from now!

If you’d like to see a few final semester/graduation-esque blog posts, let me know in the comment section below! I have a few thoughts on fun JMU posts but I’d love to hear your ideas as well!  See ya next week!

My Bachelorette Finale REACTION: Rachel’s Season

August 8, 2017

Hello my Bachelorette-loving beauties!  How was that finale last night?  Amazing, right!?  I don’t know about you, but I’ve been watching the Bachelor and the Bachelorette for years now.  I think I started watching in either 8th or 9th grade (maybe even before) and I haven’t missed a season since.  I agree with the stereotype that it’s a silly show and such a strange and unconventional way to find love but I just can’t get away from it.  I don’t know if it’s the drama that pulls me in or the gorgeous rings they get proposed to with but I’m hooked either way.

When I found out Rachel was this season’s Bachelorette, I was so excited!  Coming right after Nick’s season, which I was not excited about, I feel like the decision to have her be the Bachelorette rejuvenated the entire Bachelor nation.  She’s so spunky and honest and I just couldn’t wait for the season to begin.  Once the season did begin, she started off with a really great group of guys!  First off, I believe it was the most diverse cast they’ve ever had and, even though there were some crazies at the beginning, she had some really great guys thrown in there.  Another thing I was impressed with was that they usually keep some of the dramatic ones around for a while (probably for ratings) but she got rid of most of those people pretty early on.  That allowed the audience to focus on the people that were there for the right reasons!

Moving on to the final three guys, they were all so different from one another!  Peter seemed super serious and really intriguing at the same time but I don’t think he ever fully opened up and showed us his vulnerable side.  Rachel was upset that he wasn’t sure he would be able to propose and I think that’s totally normal for him to feel that way!  I read a tweet and the person said Rachel was thinking of engagement in terms of the show and Peter was thinking of engagement in terms of real life and I couldn’t agree more.  Eric is someone who surprised me.  I didn’t think he would make it too far but he ended up having one of the best connections with her in my opinion.  I think they were a really wonderful couple but she took him never being in love before really, really hard.  I think if Eric was a little bit more mature and experienced, it would’ve been him for sure.  Now onto Bryan.  He was also pretty intriguing but in a different way.  I feel like we never got to know who he was!  Maybe the producers didn’t show us all of what went on between him and Rachel but it seemed like they only had a physical connection and not a lot more.  Going into last night’s episode, I was rooting for Peter but I really didn’t feel like any of them were really perfect for her.

They kicked off the finale episode in Spain.  I’ve always wanted to travel to Spain, so I’m jealous they got to spend so much time there!  We started off with seeing the overnight dates of Peter and Bryan (we saw Eric’s last episode) and then Eric got sent home during the rose ceremony.  With only Peter and Bryan left, they headed into their last week together.  Bryan’s date was in a hot air balloon!  A hot air balloon date is my dream so I was dying when they were showing this!  Their date ended with Bryan feeling “confident” and Rachel was on to her last date with Peter.  First, Peter showed up in a minivan, which is a first for The Bachelorette, so that made us laugh!  They headed to an incredible church and had a good conversation about marriage and what that means to them but I don’t think it helped either of them work their feelings out.  Judging by the overnight date and their final date, I think Rachel was truly in love with Peter but just couldn’t quite get over his not wanting to propose.  At the end of the date, he ended up leaving in a heartbreaking turn of events and it was so sad!

In the end, Bryan won!  I don’t feel super great about it but I think he was an alright choice.  You can’t criticize people’s relationship when you only see them for a couple minutes on TV once a week.  I’ll admit, I didn’t think she would choose him but they might have the most wonderful relationship – there’s no way we can know.  When they came on After the Final Rose, they seemed really happy so I can only hope that this is it for them and they’ve each found someone they can be the happiest with!  Moving on from this season, I already can’t wait for the next one to start!  I’m curious who they’ll choose to be the Bachelor.  Any guesses?  I’m thinking Dean.

Thank you for reading all the way through this week’s post!  I’ll be back next week with a post all about my summer internship that just ended a few days ago.  Come back next Tuesday to see how it went! 🙂

Style Dupe: Steve Madden x Gucci

August 1, 2017

Hey hey fashion-forward beauties!  Thank you for coming back to Allison in Wonderland today for a brand new fashion post.  A few weeks ago, I went to the mall on a hunt for some cute (and comfy) slides (or mules).  I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking for as far as color but I knew the style I had in mind and I just went to town.  I must have gone into every shoe store in the mall and I felt so bad for sending the nice employees to the back again and again for different sizes and styles!  My trip to the mall was a success though because I ended up coming home with a purchase I considered to be an absolute steal!

If you’re familiar with the black and gold Gucci slides that have been all over fashion bloggers Instagram accounts, then you know how crazy expensive they are.  If you aren’t familiar with them, here’s a link to their website and be prepared to have a heart attack when you look at the price.  Since I’m a price-conscious college student, buying the Gucci pair of slides is 100% out of my price range, so when I saw these Steve Madden dupes at Nordstrom, I went over to them immediately.

Starting off with how the Steve Madden pair looks, they’re almost identical to the Gucci pair!  I’m sure the material the shoes are made with are much, much different, but as far as looks, they’re pretty much the same.  I love how they’re super flattering and slimming for your foot and it’s nice that they’re black because they’ll match almost everything!  I’m also a gold jewelry person, so they’ll always match whatever I decide to accessorize with.  Moving on to how they feel, they feel wonderful!  I was a little bit worried they would slide right off my foot when I walked around but they stay on perfectly.  I can’t comment on how the Gucci pair compares feel-wise because my feet have never been anywhere near shoes that expensive, but I’m sure those feel wonderful as well.

Overall, I’d give Steve Madden a 10/10 on this one!  I understand that the Steve Madden pair is nowhere near the quality of the Gucci pair, but I’d much rather have the cheaper pair of shoes and $600 dollars in my pocket than the expensive pair, especially because of how similar they look.  If you enjoyed this post, please feel free to comment down below if you’d like to see other style dupe posts – I have a few in mind already!  Thanks for coming by and I’ll see you next week!

Best Coffee Shops in Annapolis

July 25, 2017

Hi coffee lovers!  Thanks for visiting my blog, I hope you’re having an incredible week!  I’m here today to share some of my favorite coffee shops around the Annapolis, Maryland area.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m living in Annapolis for the duration of the summer while I’m working at my internship, so I’ve had some time to explore and find the best ones!  Let’s get to it!

Starting with Bakers & Co., this cute little place is one of my favorites!  It’s right down the street from where my apartment is, so only a short walk away, and it’s so good!  We visited on a weekday, so it wasn’t busy at all and the treats were so yummy.  Unfortunately, they don’t have soy milk, so I couldn’t get anything to drink but my boyfriend and I shared what they call a “market bun” and it was delicious! Basically, it’s croissant dough rolled up and showered in cinnamon sugar.  We used to make them at a bakery I worked at in the beginning of college and it brought back so many memories!  I definitely recommend checking out Bakers & Co.!

Next on my list is Ahh, Coffee.  It’s in Eastport, just like Bakers & Co., and it’s in a little shopping center that also has a fruit and veggie stand where you can get fresh produce!  The employees at Ahh, Coffee were incredibly nice and they provided such a great environment to sit and talk and have a snack.  I got an iced chai (with soy milk) and it was pretty good!  It was a little thicker than normal so it tasted like a milkshake but who would complain about that!?  My boyfriend got a cup of their medium roast coffee and he said that it was the best coffee he’s had in Annapolis so far, so that sounds like a great cup of coffee to me!

The next coffee shop is called City Dock Coffee!  It’s right downtown, so just a short walk from our apartment in Eastport, and it’s in a great location.  It’s right next to the Iron Rooster, which I mentioned here in my Annapolis travel post and has a great selection of treats to choose from!  Besides coffee and tea, you can choose from a huge assortment of brownies and cookies or you can get a sandwich and a side if you’re in the mood!  It’s a wonderful place to go if you’re too hungry for just a cup of coffee but not hungry enough for a big meal!

The Red Bean is the next coffee shop on my list and it’s actually my favorite one!  It’s located right in downtown Annapolis, on Main Street, and it’s a mix of both an ice cream shop and a coffee shop and it’s super cute on the inside.  The employees were really, really sweet and the tables are so spacious and spread apart!  We sat at a cute one right in one of the front windows and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.  They also have a little tin of dog treats outside, so it was fun to see all the dogs pass by and get excited when they saw them.  I’d definitely recommend stopping by this place if you’re in the area!

Ceremony Coffee Roasters is last on my list and it’s one of my favorites as well!  It’s tucked away in a little shopping center but it’s totally worth stopping in if you’re in the area.  The aesthetic is incredible – Ceremony has lots of wooden tables and natural light and they have mostly white accents so it’s a wonderful place to come to if you have some work to get done and need to concentrate.  The employees are so nice and they offer a ton of coffee options!  They also have some great food choices such as different types of toast, grilled cheese, and salads!  I’ll definitely be going back to Ceremony Coffee as soon as I get the chance!

I hope you liked this compilation of my favorite coffee shops!  Please let me know if you’re familiar with Annapolis and if I missed any good ones!  Have an amazing week!

Date Night OOTD: His & Hers

July 18, 2017

Hi beauties, happy, happy Tuesday!  I’m back with another fashion post this week, I hope you’re as excited about it as I am!  This one’s about what to wear on a summer date night so let’s get into it!

Starting off with my boyfriend’s outfit, he’s wearing a navy blue, short-sleeved Lacoste shirt and it’s one of his go-to’s.  We both love to wear a lot of blue and white so it typically goes with what I’m wearing and it also shows off his beautiful blue eyes!  He paired the shirt with a pair khaki shorts and finished out the look with his gray Vans shoes.  He was super comfortable and ready for a fun night!

Moving onto my outfit, the dress I’m wearing is one of my absolute favorite dresses I’ve ever owned!  I got it very recently from Nordstrom (linked here), so it’s most likely still available if you’re interested.  It has a tie front so you can adjust it to whatever size you are and it has elastic on the back so it easily fits whatever body type you have.  All in all it’s just SO comfortable.  Another cute feature this dress has is a little peep-hole in the front, where you tie it together.  This adds a little extra something to your look and makes it more fun to dress up or down!  It also comes in a second print and I’m dying to order it as soon as my size comes back in stock!

To get a cute background for these photos, we drove around the area where we live and found a local school that had a giant, empty field and it worked out pretty well!  There were a ton of trees and empty space and it was super fun!  If you end up getting the dress I wore, let me know in the comment section so we can talk about how amazing it is!  Well, that’s all I have for this post so I’ll see you next week for another one.  Bye!

Being a Tourist In: Chicago

July 11, 2017

Hi everyone, welcome to one of my most exciting travel posts yet!  This one’s about my recent trip to Chicago, Illinois and I can’t wait to tell you all about it!  I’ve never been to Chicago but my uncle lives there part time, so my mom and I went to visit with him and explore the city over a long weekend.  Let’s get started!

We flew into Midway International Airport on a Thursday afternoon, so when we arrived, we had the majority of the day to see the area he lives in.  He doesn’t actually live in the city of Chicago, but in a town called Elmhurst that’s only a short drive away.  It’s the absolute cutest little place that has an amazing downtown area and you would never know you’re only twenty minutes outside of Chicago!  There are so many trendy coffee shops and boutiques and the people were so friendly!  There were also a ton of cute spots to take outfit photos so that’s always a plus!  One of my favorite things about the Elmhurst main street was the old movie theater called “York” that they still have in business.  This town also has a train station right in the middle of it, so you can hop on the express train and be right in downtown Chicago in only twenty minutes!  Great for work week commuters and weekend adventurers!  If you’re in the Chicago area and have a little bit to explore the suburbs, Elmhurst would be a good one to visit.

Friday was our first full day to adventure, so we hit the city early.  We were up and out the door by 8:30 and ready to tackle the day!  So no time was wasted, we purchased tickets for the day ahead of time with the Go City Card app.  With the Go City Card app, you pay before you download the app and are then given a long list of attractions to do in the city.  With this app, you’re allowed to choose three things to do and all you have to do is scan your app when you get to each destination.  It was a great way to skip some lines and see what the city had to offer!  For our first attraction, we went to the Sky Deck, which is in the Willis Tower.  Apparently, the Willis Tower used to be called the Sears Tower, but the name switched a couple years ago.  The views from the top of the building were insane!  They had three or four glass enclosures that were extended over the side of the building so, when you walked out on them, there was literally nothing separating you from 103 floors down except a thin sheet of glass.  Crazy!

Next, we headed to Navy Pier.  Navy Pier is super cool and there was lots to do and see!  We first went inside where there were a lot of places to eat and then we headed out to the end of the pier to see Lake Michigan.  Chicago sits right on the lake so the water was beautiful!  While we were there, there was a Rolling Stones exhibit going on so there were tongue statues everywhere – so neat!  There are also a few rides and a ferris wheel on the pier (which are also an attraction that’s included on the Go City Card app), so we took some time to ride a few rides.  The ferris wheel was a great idea because you can see the entire skyline of Chicago when you reach the top.  Definitely worth the trip to the pier to see that!

After Navy Pier, we grabbed a quick lunch and decided to do an architecture boat tour as our third attraction for the day.  We caught the boat right around the bridge where Trump tower is located and rode all around the Chicago waterways!  It was a 75 minute tour in total and we learned so much about the history of Chicago and the different types of buildings that have sprung up since the Chicago fire.  This initially wasn’t something I was super excited about when I saw it on the list of things we could do, but it ended up being one of my favorite things we did while we were in the city!

On our last day in Chicago, we explored a little bit more and went to the Bean!  I found out it’s actually called Cloud Gate, but it’s in Millennium Park, which is a really beautiful area of Chicago where there are a lot of sculptures and other forms of art.  After this, we did a two hour segway tour with a company called Absolutely Chicago.  It was awesome!  We had a few minutes before we started where we could practice and get the hang of it and, I’ll admit, I almost wiped out the first time I went up a big hill, but overall it was pretty easy!  Great for people of all ages!  Since we had spent the day before going all around the city, I had perviously seen a lot of what we saw on the segway tour, but it was nice to get some more information about the touristy locations we went to.  I’d recommend doing this if you want to see a lot of prime Chicago spots in a short amount of time!

My trip to Chicago was incredible and thank goodness I could sleep in the day after we got back because I was exhausted!  Overall, Chicago was a lot cleaner and more friendly than I was expecting and I’d go back in a heartbeat.  I’m already looking to visit again soon so let me know if you have any suggestions of places to go that I didn’t mention in this post.  Have a great rest of your week and I’ll see you next Tuesday with another post!

My Favorite Drugstore Mascaras

June 27, 2017

Hi guys!  I’m glad to see you back on the blog!  A couple months ago, I shared with you that I wanted to start doing more beauty-related blog posts so here I am today to share my favorite mascaras!  I think mascara is an important staple to any makeup routine, whether you go all out or just throw a few products on so let’s get started!

My absolute favorite mascara I’ve ever used is Benefit’s They’re Real! Lengthening mascara.  I wanted to try this for a long, long time before I actually made the purchase because it’s a pretty pricey mascara.  Before this, I had always used inexpensive mascara from the drugstore but I got a free little trial size when I bought a different Benefit product and that’s when I knew I needed to buy the full size as soon as possible.  It’s amazing!  It lengthens and thickens and looks great even when you wear it without eyeshadow or eyeliner.  Totally worth the money!

The next mascara that I’m going to share is Maybelline’s “The Rocket” mascara.  This was the mascara I was using for YEARS before I switched to the Benefit one, and it’s still the one I use when I don’t necessarily have the money to be spending a ton on higher end brands.  The mascara itself is very natural looking and doesn’t smudge but what drew me to this mascara in particular was the wand.  The wand has a lot of little bristles that spread and define your lashes and that makes all the difference!  Before using this mascara, I’d never used a wand like that and it’s incredible!

The last of my favorite mascaras is one from Pixi and it’s called the Lower Lash mascara.  I just came across this product recently and I can’t see myself getting rid of it any time soon!  Putting mascara on your bottom lashes is hard sometimes because the wand is so big and your lashes down there are so small and this mascara is the perfect remedy for that issue.  The wand is tiny so the mascara doesn’t clump and it’s just so cute!  I’d definitely recommend getting this product if you have the same issue I do with applying mascara to your bottom lashes.

I hope these recommendations helped you out if you’re on the hunt for a new mascara.  They’re my absolute favorite and I know you’ll love them too!  Have a great holiday and I’ll see you next Tuesday!

Sunny Day Essentials

June 20, 2017

Hi everyone!  Welcome back to Allison in Wonderland!  In honor of the first day of summer coming up, I thought a summer essentials post was in order!  I’ve put together a few items that you won’t catch me without during the next couple months; enjoy!

The first item is my big, floppy, straw hat.  I’ve wanted to get one of these for a few summers now and I’m so excited I finally got one!  It’s perfect for so many occasions – going to the beach, walking around downtown on a hot day, or to wear while you’re lounging by the pool!  It’s super lightweight and protects your face and neck from the harsh sunlight.  I love it!

The next item on the list is adorable sandals!  I own a staple black pair and a staple brown pair and I, of course, wear them almost every day!  Since I typically carry black or brown bags when I go out, I wanted to have two pairs of shoes that I can wear no matter what bag I’m carrying and it’s worked out amazingly.  My black ones (pictured above) are from SheIn and my brown ones are from Target, so they’re both extremely affordable and cute!

Another item you won’t find me without is my keys and what comes with keys?  Cute keychains!  I got the cactus keychain that’s in the photo above on my recent spring break trip to Arizona and it’s such a sweet memory to think back on every time I see it.  My friend that I went on the trip with got the same one and it’s nice that we both have the same souvenir from our trip!  If you haven’t read up on my posts about that trip, check them out here!

Those are a few of the items I’ve been loving lately now that the weather has finally gotten warm!  I love reading all the comments I get from you guys so please leave me a comment if you’d like to see another essentials post, like maybe what my beach essentials are!  Anyway, have a great week and I’ll see you next Tuesday!

The Soundtrack of My Summer

June 13, 2017

Hey, I’m Alli!  Thanks for visiting my blog!  I hope your summer is going wonderfully so far.  I’m here today to let you know what songs I’ve been loving recently.  I absolutely love listening to music, especially in the summertime!  It’s so fun to roll your windows down and listen to your favorite playlist and these are some of the songs that have been coming through my speakers over the past couple weeks!

The Night We Met by Lord Huron  I first heard this song when I was watching the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” and it’s just incredible.  It’s a sort of indie/rock combination and it’s a really soothing ballad for driving at night!

100 Letters by Halsey  Halsey’s new album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom just came out and it’s insane – this song is one of the best ones!  Halsey is an incredible artist and her first album, Badlands, is one of my favorites of all time!  Go check out her new one!

How Far I’ll Go from the Moana Soundtrack  This song has been one of my favorites lately because it’s so catchy!  Obviously, being from an animated Disney movie, it’s going to be good, but usually I can’t listen to those type of songs over and over.  This one I can.  It’s so inspirational!

Issues by Julia Michaels  I was hearing this song over and over on the radio and every time I heard it, I thought to myself, “I need to look this song up,” and I’m so glad I finally did!  Julia has such an interesting and unique voice – I love it!

All I’ve Ever Needed by AJ Michalka  I first heard this song at my sorority retreat this past semester and have been hooked every since!  It’s from a movie called Grace Unplugged, which I’ve never seen, but this song definitely makes me wanna have a night in and rent it.

Love by Lana Del Rey  In high school, Lana Del Rey was one of my absolute favorite artists and I’m stoked she’s coming out with new music again!  This one has a little bit of a different feel from Summertime Sadness but it definitely holds it’s own!

Octa Hate by Ryn Weaver  I’ve included this song on my playlists for years and it never gets old.  Ryn Weaver just has a neat, retro sort of vibe to her music and it goes with any mood!  Definitely worth the dollar on iTunes for a cool, summer jam!

Thy Will by Hillary Scott  My roommate played this song for me a couple months ago and I’ve been listening to it non-stop ever since.  It’s worship music and it has a beautiful, contemporary twist to it and it’s the woman from Lady Antebellum!  How amazing!

Colors by Halsey  This isn’t a new song by any means but it’s my favorite song of all time!  Colors tells such an intricate story and it’s relevant for everyone!  Halsey is going on tour soon and I can’t wait to see if she’s coming to a city near me!

Those are my top songs of right now!  Do we have any of the same ones?  Let me know – I’ll see ya next time!

Being a Tourist In: New York City

June 6, 2017

Hey everyone and welcome back to my next “Being a Tourist in…” post!  I added to my list of summer trips by going to New York City with one of my best friends this past weekend and I’m so excited to share with you what we were up to in this incredible city!  Let’s get started!

My friend lives about an hour outside of New York City, so we spent Friday night in her area and then took a transit bus from her town into the city on Saturday morning.  We left around 8:45am, so we arrived at Port Authority, which is right near Times Square, at about 10am.  When we went to the city together a couple years ago, we ended up walking a ton more than we thought we would, so this time, she had the wonderful idea of getting tickets for one of the double-decker, hop-on hop-off buses!  We used a Groupon, so the tickets were only about $18 per ticket and we were set for the whole day!  The only walking we had to do beforehand was walking from Port Authority to the Visitor Center to redeem our tickets and our feet were thanking us for that.

Basically, the bus makes a huge loop around the city, taking about an hour or two in total!  If you take the downtown loop, it hits all the touristy areas, like Soho, the Empire State Building, and China town.  We got on and rode until we were near Chelsea Market and the bus driver made a special stop just for us so we’d be a little bit closer to where we needed to be!  Once we were off the bus, we walked about eight blocks or so to Chelsea Market.  It was so cool!  They have all sorts of food vendors and there are even some little shops inside with books and cards and toys.  After Chelsea Market, we went up on the High Line.  I had heard great things about it, but I’d never been so I was thrilled to see what it had to offer!  Essentially, it’s an elevated space where a train used to run, but it’s been renovated to be a walking space above the street with greenery and great views.  We were there on such a beautiful day so it was a perfect spot to hang out for a bit!

After we left that area and grabbed a quick lunch, we headed back to a bus stop to hop back on the double decker.  Our next stop was the Top of the Rock!  In all the times I’ve been to the city, I’ve never done the Top of the Rock so that’s what I was most excited for during this trip.  The tickets to get to the top were around $35, so not a terrible price to see such an awesome sight.  At the top, it wasn’t super crowded, especially for a Saturday afternoon, and two couples got engaged while we were there!  It was cute to see that in person – I’m sure they have proposals happen there every day!  When it was time to go, we decided to walk back to Port Authority through Times Square instead of taking the double decker because it wasn’t too long of a distance.  When we were walking through Times Square, there was a Christian band playing and it was just incredible to see the love they were sharing in the middle of such a high-traffic, busy area!

We made a quick stop at the famous Magnolia bakery to get a few cupcakes and then we were on our way!  We made the transit bus back with about two minutes to spare and couldn’t of been happier with our day.  I love New York City and I’m so thankful that I am able to take day trips there!  If you’ve ever been to the city, let me know what your favorite thing was that you did during your trip.  See you next week!
