Being a Tourist In: Philadelphia

June 28, 2016

Hi everyone and welcome back to Allison in Wonderland!  This week is extra special because I’m doing two “Being a Tourist In…” posts in a row!  I’ve been traveling and exploring a little more than usual lately, so keep reading to find out what adventures I had when I went to Philly this past weekend!

Independence Beer Garden

Spending the day in Philadelphia is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now because, before this weekend, I’d only been there for Phillies’ games.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE going to Phillies’ games, but I was dying to see what more Philadelphia had to offer.  We started in Old City, around the City Tavern.  I parked in a parking garage right along 2nd street, which was $18.50 for anything over an hour and a half, so if you’re visiting, I suggest searching for cheaper parking options before you go!  After we checked out the waterfront, we headed towards Independence Hall to walk around the historical sites of the city.  While walking along this area, we spotted a place to eat called the Independence Beer Garden!  This is the prettiest place I’ve ever eaten.  It’s a very rustic restaurant with outdoor seating.  My favorite part about it was that it had different kinds of plants all over!  I definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a light lunch or quick snack!

The Franklin Square carousel!

Next, we headed down Independence Hall to Franklin Square where we got to see the fountain and a cool view of the bridge!  After this, we headed to South Street and saw the Magic Gardens.  We didn’t go in because we decided you could pretty much get the gist of it from the outside, but it was incredible!  So much work went into this exhibit and the artist is still working on it!  On our way back to the parking garage from South Street, we got to see a very pretty area of Philly.  It quieted down and the streets were just gorgeous.  It was very cool to be able to see so many great parts of such a big city!

That about wraps up my Philadelphia blog post but you can be waiting for another one because I know I’ll be headed back soon!  Let me know in the comments where your favorite part in Philadelphia is and I’ll be back next week with a new post!  Bye! 🙂

Being a Tourist In: Bethany Beach

June 21, 2016

Hi again, I hope you had a great week!  Today, I’m doing a post about a place very special to my heart; Bethany Beach, Delaware.  My grandparents moved there a couple months ago, so I’ve been able to spend almost every weekend at the beach this summer and I’m loving it!  Let me know if you’ve ever visited!  Throughout this post, I’m going to go through a couple of my favorite places to hang out when I’m there… Enjoy!

Franklin, my blow-up turtle!

The first thing I always do when I get to Bethany is jump in the pool!  I don’t have a pool at my house, so the fact that my Mommom and Poppop have a pool is AMAZING.  Also, it’s a nice perk to have when you come back from the beach and are covered in sand!  I bought this blow-up float at a store on the boardwalk and I could not be happier with it.  It was inexpensive and it’s so cute and perfect for floating around the pool on a hot day!

Another thing I like to do when I visit is go to places that aren’t available where I live.  Two places in particular – the Fractured Prune and the Juice Box – are really close to my grandparent’s house and super easy to stop at on the way to or from the beach!  The Fractured Prune is a donut shop where you basically create your own donuts from scratch!  You choose the glaze and toppings you want and it’s such a cool experience!  The Juice Box is a little juice shop on the side of the road where they serve fresh squeezed juice!  They offer a nice variety of very healthy juices to balance out those donuts. 🙂

Lastly, I love to go to the beach at sunset and just walk on the sand and put my feet in the water.  If you go to places like Delaware Seashore State Park or Fenwick Island (which are both within ten minutes of Bethany), it’s a lot less crowded than it usually is right at Bethany Beach, which gives you more privacy.  Doing this is so relaxing, especially if you’ve spent all day running around, and let’s you wind down surrounded by the sound of the waves.

Thanks for reading this post and let me know what you’d like to read about next week!  See you later!

Summertime Nail Polish Color Combinations

June 17, 2016

Hi guys and welcome back to the blog!  Earlier this week, I was having trouble deciding what colors to paint my nails and toenails and I realized that, while it’s not a huge decision, it’s something I spend time thinking about every time I paint my nails – so why not write an article about it!?

The first combination I am excited to share is a pair of my go-to summer polishes; Essie’s “Fiji” and Sinful Color’s “No Text Red.”  “Fiji” is a beautiful light pink color (my favorite color to paint my nails year-round) and is especially perfect on top of a nice tan!  Usually I wouldn’t wear red nail polish during the summertime, but “No Text Red” is so vibrant, you can totally get away with it!  If I can’t decide what color I want, I always choose these!

“Island Hopping” & “Sand Tropez”

The next two are a more neutral pairing.  Essie’s “Sand Tropez” and “Island Hopping” give your eyes a needed break from all the bright nail colors we see during this time of year.  Because “Sand Tropez” is made up of sandy tones (haha!), you can rock it all the way from a week on the job to a week on the beach!  “Island Hopping” is one of my favorites because it doesn’t look bad if it chips a little bit!  In the summer, I don’t always want to take the time to repaint my nails halfway through the week, so the subtleness of this color is not only refreshing, but a time-saver too.

The last colors I’m going to share today are the “coolest” pair of all. 🙂  Sinful Color’s “Snow Me White” and Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel in “Blue Hue” are a nice change from all the warm tones!  While still being summery (who doesn’t love a white nail in the summertime), they give off a different vibe than the other colors.  Another plus is that color’s like these tend to wash you out in the winter when you don’t have as much color, and in the summer, we don’t have to worry about that!

That’s all for today’s post, thank you for reading!  Let me know in the comments if we have any of the same favorite nail polishes.  See you next week!

Summer Outfit of the Day

June 7, 2016

Hi guys, welcome back to Allison in Wonderland!  For this week’s post, I thought putting together a little outfit of the day would be fun, especially now that we’re finally getting into summertime weather!

IMG_8684

Pictured above is an outfit that I wore for a photoshoot I planned for my sorority, Sigma Alpha Omega.  SAO is the Christian sorority at James Madison and we had such a good day doing this shoot!  It was fun to see everyone dressed up and being able to spend the day doing something different.

My outfit is from an assortment of stores so I’ll get right to it!  My dress is from Urban Outfitters, my favorite store!  It’s a white dress with some lace detailing and it’s perfect for summer.  I’d been eyeing this dress for a while and by the time I finally got around to going to the mall, they only had one left and it was my size!  Woohoo!  A bonus to this dress is it has a built in slip so you won’t be able to see through it!  My army green vest is from American Eagle and perfect to pair with almost any outfit.  You can wear it with a sundress, jeans and a t-shirt, anything!  It’s not the most summery color but I think it provides a nice contrast to an outfit.  Finally, my little brown booties are from Forever 21 (they were also pictured in my Things I’m Loving Right Now post from back in March).  I’ve had these booties for a couple years now and they’re still going strong – I wear them all the time and they’re so comfortable, even when I have to walk all over campus!

That wraps up today’s “Outfit of the Day” post!  Thanks for visiting my blog and be sure to come back next Tuesday for another post!  Have a great week! 🙂

My Week in Review: May 17th – 24th

May 24, 2016

Hi everyone and welcome back to Allison In Wonderland!  For today’s post, I had an idea that I thought would be kind of cool to do; a review of my week!  My main reason for writing this blog is to be able to document what’s going on in my life so I can look back on it later, so I thought this would be a different and fun way to write – I hope you like it!

This past week was a very exciting week because I began my summer internship!  This is my first internship/job in the field that I’m hoping to work in one day so I didn’t quite know what to expect right off the bat.  I had toured the office twice before starting and loved the atmosphere and vibes of the office, but going for a tour and going for your first day of work felt a bit different!  The place I’m working at is a marketing firm and, since I’m an advertising major, it’s very relevant to where I want to go with my career.  So far, I’ve worked alongside the Creative Services team, which are the graphic designers and the copyeditor, and it’s been amazing!  I feel very respected by everyone at the company and that’s something that a lot of interns wouldn’t be able to say, so I feel very grateful I’m working with these particular people.  I’ve already been given the opportunity to actually design logos and invitations and such and I’ve only been there for one week!  I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the summer and can’t wait to keep you guys updated!  Let me know in the comment section if you have any ideas for other internship related blog post ideas!

The next exciting thing that happened this week was that I attended a wedding!  I’ve only been to two weddings in my whole life (before this one) and I was very young when I went to both of them, so I don’t remember much.  Because of that, I was really excited to go to this one!  I went with my boyfriend, so I didn’t know the bride and groom and didn’t know too many people there, but I could still feel how much love the couple has for one another and the great group of people that they were able to bring together on their special day.  I wish them the best in their marriage and can’t wait to see where this incredible journey takes them!

Overall, it was such a great week and I can’t wait to do more posts like this in the future – it’s going to be an exciting summer!  Also, The Bachelorette started last night and I already have my final four in mind!  Let me know if you’d like to see some Bachelorette posts on this site!  Thanks for reading!

Sweetlife Festival: 2016

May 17, 2016

Hi everyone, I’m back this week with a post about a music festival that my boyfriend and I attended this past weekend!  I’ve been wanting to go to a festival for a while now and this one was too good of an offer to pass up!  The tickets were only $100 and there were so many cool artists coming!

The festival was in Columbia, Maryland, at Merriweather Post Pavilion, and it’s called the Sweetlife Festival!  Sweetlife is a one-day festival, run by SweetGreen, a local restaurant chain.  Since Sweetlife is put on by them, they wisely combine the music with food, and make it a combination music/food festival!  This year, they had The 1975 and Halsey headlining and they drew such a great crowd because they featured a variety of artists on the three stages at the venue.

It started around 12 but we didn’t end up getting there until a little after 3 because we wanted to watch specific people and didn’t want to tire out too early!  As it turns out, a thunderstorm started right when we got there and it poured for about two hours.  Even though we tried to take cover under a tree, we still got soaked.  After the rain stopped, the sun actually came out so that helped to warm us up as we walked around to see different performances and get some food!  We mostly stayed on the lawn by the Main Stage, where Blondie, Grimes, The 1975, and a few others performed.  Flume and Halsey were back on the Treehouse Stage, so it was very nicely spaced out.  The different stages were all really different from each other which made the venue perfect for suiting the various artists!

All in all, I really enjoyed the day!  The vibe was a lot different than I was expecting but it was still a ton of fun to experience, especially since it was my first festival.  I would definitely recommend it to the younger, high school/college crowd and would consider going back in the future – although, I will definitely be checking the weather before buying tickets.  🙂

Thank you for reading today’s post and I’ll have another one for you next Tuesday!  Have a great day!

How To: Survive Finals Week

May 3, 2016

Hi!  Today, I’m back with a post about how to survive finals week when you’re in college!  I’m actually writing this in the middle of my finals week so all this advice is definitely real – I’m using it right now! 🙂

My first bit of advice is to make sure you get enough sleep.  It’s so tempting to feel like you need to pull an all-nighter before your exam, especially if it’s an early exam the next day and you’re stressed that you might not do well.  You want to study for as long as possible (maybe because you put it off until the day before) and feel like you can retain the information better if you just don’t go to sleep at all, but sleep actually helps us to remember and sort out the information we’ve learned that day and will make your mind more alert when you go to take your exam.  I always study right up until I go to sleep the night before and then study more, in the morning, right before the exam.  That way I’m alert and able to take the exam with a clear mind, but all the exam information that I studied is fresh in my mind.

Second, take time to make sure you look like yourself.  I know throwing on sweatpants and a t-shirt is convenient and quick when you’re busy and stressed but if you don’t go through your normal routine and dress how you usually do, your brain won’t know it has to perform.  Getting ready as you do on a daily basis signals to your brain that your day is beginning and things are happening.  If you never go through this process, your brain will still be in “sleep” mode and won’t be ready to take a test.  This is something I’ve started doing and paying attention to recently and it’s mentally helped me out a lot!

Third, make sure you’re eating healthy and drinking plenty of water.  When we’re constantly on the go, we can easily forget to eat and drink as we should.  Eating healthy takes more time and energy than just grabbing a Pop-Tart, but, in the end, you’ll be glad you took the time to take care of yourself when everyone around you is getting sick!  Emergen-C can also help you out a lot.  It’s just a little extra boost for your immune system that could make or break your health during finals week!

Lastly, recognize that your final exam grades don’t define who you are as a person.  It’s hard to be in college and not fall victim to the idea that you aren’t as successful as your peers.  We constantly compare our own grades to our friend’s grades and, in reality, most of the time we aren’t even taking the same classes so we aren’t comparing the same thing.  Some college students are better at certain subjects than others and, as long as you’re doing your best, that’s all anyone can ask for.  Getting good grades is very helpful, but I think any employer would value hard work and diligence over knowledge anyways. 🙂

I hope this post helps you take a moment to relax and take a step back from your hectic finals week!  Let me know in the comments below what your best finals week advice is and I’ll be sure to comment back!  See you next week!

My Favorite Music: Spring 2016

April 26, 2016

Hi everyone!  I’m really excited about today’s post because I get to share some music I’ve been loving for the past couple of months!  I love listening to music and spending time finding new artists and bands so keep reading to find out who I’ve been listening to!

UnknownThe first artist I want to talk about it Halsey.  Halsey is an electropop, American singer/songwriter and has been killing it, recently, at festivals and on tour.  You’ve probably heard of some of her songs, they’re all over the radio!  Her debut album, Badlands, was released in 2015 and is rightfully winning her crazy publicity.  My favorites from the album are Colors, Gasoline, and Hurricane – they’re so, so good.  Her sound is so unique and I love it!  She’s touring from now until August in the US, Canada, and the UK so definitely check to see if she’s coming to a venue near you.

Unknown-1The second artist I want to talk about is the band MisterWives!  I first heard about MisterWives when they performed at Madipalooza, a music festival James Madison University puts on every year.  They were the headliners of the festival and put on such a great show!  They perform with so much energy and heart that you can’t help but love them.  Their first album Reflections came out in 2014 and is still so relevant.  My favorite songs from that album are Hurricane, Queens, and Our Own House.  The personalities of everyone in the band comes out through their music and their album art is amazing as well!  Definitely check out their tour dates to see if you can go see them, they put on a show like no one else can!

The next thing I want to talk about is a Pandora station!  Lately, I’ve had to drive all around and have needed a station that I can just put on and not have to worry about skipping/changing the songs.  That has been the Dan + Shay Pandora station.  I’ve had this station for a while, so I’ve kind of molded it into my personalized, ideal country music playlist, but honestly, it wasn’t that bad from the beginning.  The artist they play are fantastic and it’s always up-to-date, so I definitely recommend checking this one out for long car rides or background music!

That’s all for today but I’m going to see Halsey perform at a festival in just a few weeks, so make sure you check back to see an upcoming post about my experience!  Thanks for reading! 🙂

My 5 Favorite Daily Vloggers on YouTube

April 19, 2016

Hello and welcome back to my blog!  Today I’m going to be talking about one of my absolute favorite media platforms; YouTube!  Lately, I’ve found myself watching videos on YouTube more and more and it’s because of what YouTubers call “daily vlogs”!  Basically, having a “vlog” channel means that you have a channel where you post daily video blogs!  They can range from being five minutes long to being thirty minutes long and showcase everything from going to the doctor to walking your first red carpet.  Whatever the case may be, I’m a bit obsessed and I wanted to share who my favorite people to watch are!

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 12.58.01 PMThe first channel I want to talk about is Ellie and Jared’s channel.  They are a young, Utah-based couple who have two adorable little boys, Jackson and Calvin.  I believe they’ve been daily vlogging for a couple years now, but I’ve only been watching for the past ten months or so.  Just in the time I’ve been watching them, I have already fallen in love with the way they are rooted in family and how they adore their little boys.  They show themselves doing day-to-day activities and that might seem boring, but watch just a couple videos and you’ll understand why their subscriber count is growing by the minute.  They are definitely my favorite YouTube family!

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 12.58.32 PMThe second channel I want to share is the SacconeJoly’s channel.  This shows another couple, Anna and Jonathan, who have two children, named Emelia and Eduardo, and have a third one on the way!  Just in the time I’ve been watching them, they’ve moved from Ireland to the U.K. and had another kid (Eduardo)!  It’s basically the same set up that Ellie and Jared’s channel is based on but it’s exciting to experience the way a family lives in a different country.  They are constantly traveling to London for meetings and such and it’s fun to keep up with their day-to-day life, even if it’s just driving Emelia to preschool!

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 12.58.54 PMThe third channel I’m excited to share is Aspyn and Parker’s channel.  I found out about this channel because Aspyn has a very successful beauty/lifestyle channel where she does clothing hauls and makeup tutorials!  Aspyn and Parker recently got married (watch their wedding video, so cute!) and are now traveling the world and doing so many other fun things!  It’s cool to be able to watch their vlogs and keep up with their lives because they’re the same age as me, so it’s interesting to see what people my age are doing across the country!

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 12.59.19 PMMy fourth favorite channel is Alex and Michael.  Alex is another one who also has a successful beauty/lifestyle channel and watching her videos there lead me to this channel! In their videos, you can really see how normal of a life they live in Tennessee.  They are very relatable and you get to see their cute puppy, Colby, every once in a while!  With everything they’ve got going on in their lives, it will be exciting to see what they’ll do next!

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 12.59.39 PMThe last channel I have to share with you today is Zoella’s vlog channel.  Zoella is a very, very well known YouTuber, but most people don’t know she has a vlog channel in addition to her main channel!  She doesn’t vlog everyday, but when she does, it’s sure worth it!  She really lets you in to her life and her home and she tells you (secretly) about a lot of the projects she’s working on and it makes you feel like you’re a part of the process!  She’s also been very open about her struggle with anxiety, which has helped a lot of people, and she makes you feel like she’s talking to a friend when, really, she’s talking to a camera.  I definitely recommend checking out her channel!

Those are my 5 favorite YouTubers of the moment, I hope you enjoyed!  Please let me know in the comments if we have any of the same favorites or if you have any favorites of your own!

College How To

How To: Plan a Formal Event in College

April 12, 2016

Welcome back!  Today’s post is going to be all about planning a formal event when you’re in college, whether it be for a sorority or fraternity or campus club!  Over the course of this semester, I have been a part of planning my sorority’s spring Formal, and I’m going to share the steps we went through to make it the best it could be!

The first thing my committee and I needed to decide was the location.  In the past, my sorority has had our Formal at churches (we’re a Christian sorority), at banquet halls, many different places!  Since our budget this year was very small, we wanted to keep it on campus since booking a banquet room in a James Madison building (for a student) is free.  After deciding this, we could go forward with planning the theme!

We discussed a lot of different themes but eventually decided on a carnival theme!  Usually Formal is more, ya know, formal, but we wanted to make it more interactive this time around.  We didn’t have a lot of money given to our committee to throw the event, so we got most of our decorations from Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Dollar General!  Fortunately for us, most of the places we went had actual sections set aside for carnival parties!!

We decided the main things we wanted to have were games and a space designated for pictures.  For games, we bought supplies for a can toss, corn hole, and a balloon pop – all typical things you would see at a carnival!  None of these were difficult to put together and they ended up being so, so fun.  For the balloon pop, we filled each balloon with confetti so, when it was popped, confetti burst out!  As far as the photo space, we bought two big rolls of red and blue carnival tickets and hung strips of 40 tickets to make a backdrop.  After that, we hung a multi-colored banner on top to add some more color!  We included props, such as clown noses and a boa, on the side so everyone could get some silly pictures too!

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

Our photo backdrop with some of our props we made!

IMG_8346

Of course, we had more things like balloons and a popcorn stand and jolly rancher center pieces (for the tables) but those were the main decorations that made up our party!  Even though it was stressful envisioning everything, we had a blast putting this together.  I hope this post helped with your future party planning and I’ll talk to you next week!
